What to ask your installer before accepting a heat-pump quote

A heat-pump quote may tell you the brand, the price and an expected rebate. Before you agree, ask for the details that let you check what is actually being proposed.

You do not need to become an HVAC expert. Start with these three questions.

1. “Can you give me the complete equipment list?”

Ask the installer to put these details in writing:

• Outdoor unit: full model number, including its suffix.
• Indoor equipment: every indoor unit, air handler or coil, with quantities.
• Furnace and required accessories, if part of the proposed combination.
• AHRI reference number for the combination, if available.

Keep this list with the quote. A brand or outdoor model alone may correspond to several equipment combinations, so it does not identify everything you are buying.

For a concrete example, Installed Cost’s Connecticut lookup returned AHRI 215734919, with outdoor model SUZ-AA18NLHZ*** and indoor model SLZ-AF18NL***. Those model strings include asterisks in the source record. Finding that row is a starting point for checking the equipment, not proof that an unspecified quote matches it. Ask the installer to clarify the full equipment schedule; do not fill in missing suffixes yourself.

2. “Which rebate program are you referring to, and what still needs checking?”

Ask for the program name and a link to its current official requirements. Have the installer distinguish the equipment-list evidence from the remaining conditions for your project.

Questions to put in writing:

• What supports the equipment claim?
• Which household, property, contractor or project requirements still apply?
• Are any approvals or other steps needed before installation?
• Who submits the application, and is the quoted incentive an estimate?

3. “What is included in this price?”

Ask whether the quote includes installation labor, electrical work, duct changes, permits, removal of old equipment and startup/testing. Ask the installer to identify exclusions and possible extra charges.

Request the total before incentives, with each estimated incentive shown separately. That makes it easier to compare quotes without assuming every proposed rebate will be paid.
